Jun 15, 2012 My Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM with Nikon mount lens arrived today, and I spent almost all day playing with it: taking photographs and processing the results. All images in this review were made without a tripod and with optical stabilization on.
Dark Clouds and Backlit Tree The sun shines through a backlit tree while dark clouds break apart the bright sky. A sloping landscape provides the base for this shot. 35mm f/8.0 1/1000s ISO 200 |
Spring Grain Field The color of Spring is often bright/light green. This field is in a local State Game Lands - be sure to discover your local scenery. 18mm f/8.0 1/80s ISO 100 |
Talking Canada Geese These Canada Geese on the bank of the Susquehanna River (PA, USA) just couldn't keep their mouths closed. Somewhat unusual is that I am below these birds. 210mm f/7.1 1/160s ISO 100 |
Adam T. Bower Memorial Dam The Adam T. Bower Memorial Dam (formerly known as the Sunbury Fabridam), located in Sunbury, PA and pictured here, is the longest inflatable dam in the world. It is inflated during the summer recreation/boating season and deflated during the coldest half of the year. Some debris needs cleaned off of one of the bags. Colors in this shots are a combination of a setting sun (warm) and shade (cool). This 1/10 sec shot was taken handheld - thanks to OS a a stable (squatted) position. 120mm f/9.0 1/10s ISO 100 |
Out in the Field With only the sky and a field with uniformly growing plant-life in the frame, there are few distractions from the main subject. 50mm f/5.0 1/200s ISO 100 |
Water - The Greatest Liquid A slow/long shutter speed stands no chance of stopping the motion of water over a dam - hopefully you get the feeling of the power in the water. 43mm f/10.0 1/15s ISO 100 |
Horse Shake Ever see a horse shake? If you did, you know what I'm taking about when I say there is a lot of movement going on during this event. It's much more eye-opening if you are on them during the shake. 50mm f/8.0 1/125s ISO 200 |
Sunbury, PA Flood Wall Stairway A stairway and flood wall provide a lot of straight lines going through the frame. 18mm f/8.0 1/50s ISO 100 |
Goose Talking While Eating This goose couldn't even eat without talking. 250mm f/8.0 1/160s ISO 100 |
Backlit Grass Picture A late-day sun sets behind this Spring-green grass. 250mm f/8.0 1/25s ISO 200 |
Horses in the Pasture A pair of horses do what horses do most of the time - graze. A wide angle focal length creates depth and emphasizes the close subject. 18mm f/8.0 1/160s ISO 250 |
Spring Fields under Sweet Light The sunlight from the first and last hour of the day provides sweet (warm-colored) light for your photos. Add a few clouds and even a mundane landscape can come alive under sweet light. 18mm f/8.0 1/60s ISO 100 |
Pine Cone A lone pine cone hangs from its tree. A long focal length and a long subject-to-background distance create a diffusely-blurred background. 210mm f/8.0 1/160s ISO 200 |
Whalebone Braids A young girl looks pleased with her whalebone braids. Lighting is natural light coming through large windows. Out of focus purple carpet is the background source. 95mm f/5.6 1/60s ISO 400 |
Corn Shocks in the Snow Snow forms the base of this composition while a dark cloud frames the top. Long shadows and rays of sunlight angle through the frame. 250mm f/8.0 1/200s ISO 100 |
Mushroom and Shamrocks As parents, our kids need to be a top priority in our lives - and this means spending time with them. Teaching them the love of photography will give you something to do together. What does this have to do with a mushroom? My oldest daughter finds them fascinating and loves to photograph them. We often do this together. 95mm f/8.0 1/25s ISO 400 |
Spring Morning I love just-emerging leaves backlit by a rising sun. Especially after a long winter, the light green and red colors looks amazing. 18mm f/8.0 1/100s ISO 100 |

Sigma 18 250mm F3.5 6.3
- Nov 21, 2012 The 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM is the latest in a long line of all-in-one 'superzoom' lenses from Sigma, having been announced in June 2012. It offers two main developments over its predecessor, the confusingly similarly-named 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM - namely improved close-up capability (hence the 'Macro' moniker), and a significant reduction in size and weight.
